Full Description
Site of Kettlewell Convalescent Home, Sycamore Drive, Swanley as shown on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Edition O/S maps. The main buildings have now been demolished.
The Home was opened in 1885 for poor patients needing to recuperate after major surgery at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. During WW1 the Home was used as a military hospital for convalescent servicemen. Then in 1920 the Alexandra Hospitalfor Children with Hip Disease relocated to the site from London. The majority of the children were suffering from tuberculosis of the hip, knee or spine. In 1940 the Hospital was evacuated to Luton, Bedfordshire and the site was again used as a military hospital. After WW2 the hospital continued to be used for TB cases until in 1959 it was declared redundant and was closed.
