Full Description

During excavations associated with the construction of a Swimming pool at Bradstow School in Broadstairs, an Anglo Saxon inhumation was uncovered. This grave was orientated approximately east west along its longest axis and was rectangular in plan with rounded ends. The grave cut measured 2.5 metres long,.0.85 metres wide and 0.3 metres deep. The edges of the cut were nearly vertical, breaking sharply along the sides to a flattish base, at either end the sides curved gently towards the base. The skeleton was laid on the base of the cut and was badly fragmented with only the skull and parts of the long bones of the legs surviving. It was possible to determine that the position of the body was extended, lying on its back with the head at the west end, facing south. Whilst cleaning the skull during post excavation a single bead was discovered beneath the jaw, which had originally been located at the neck, the composition of the bead has not yet been identified. In the area of the chest, an Iron Knife and a flat Iron plate were preserved. The iron plate may be the remains of a belt fitting or part of a brooch. The skeleton was covered with a single deposit of mid greyish brown friable chalky silt. The fill had been disturbed throughout by fine roots. The outer deposit around the edge of the cut was slightly more chalky and lighter in colour where the chalk edges of the cut had eroded. (1-2) (information summarised from sources)
