Full Description

Parkwood Convalescent Home, Beechenlea Lane, Swanley as shown on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Edition O/S maps. The main building has now been converted into Parkwood Hall Co-operative Acaemy, a school for children with special needs, as shown on the current O/S map.
The Convalescent Home was opened in 1893 to be used by patients in the early stages of their convalescence from the London Hospital, St Thomas' Hospital, Guy's Hospital, the Middlesex Hospital, Westminster Hospital and St Mary's Hospital. There were a total of 120 beds, 40 female and 80 male. Patients stayed on average 3 to 5 weeks, mostly recovering from surgery following accidents. During WW1 the home was used as a military hospital and then after the war the Home re-opened for convalescent patients from the London hospitals. In WW2 the Home was run by the Red Cross for convalescent servicemen. In 1948 the Home became part of the NHS and continued as a Convalescent Home until it closed in the early 1960s. In 1971 it was reopened as Parkwood Hall School.
