A post-medieval chalk pit is visible on the 1st edition (1862-1875) and 2nd edition (1897-1900) OS maps at Ripple, Dover. The feature is labelled as "Old Chalk Pit" on the 1st edition OS map, suggesting that the quarry could have been established prior to the 19th century. (1, 2)
