Full Description

A hoard of 62 Iron Age coins were found within a pit. The Pit cut was oval in shape with a diameter of 0.79m and a depth of 0.6m and is located 60m north of the enclosure. The fills contained Iron Age pottery dated 550- 250/50 BC and the feature cut a small post hole, cut 1051, which was dated to the Early Iron Age. A study of the coins identified them as The coins are bronze with a high tin Potins of Flat Linear I type (Potin FLI). This type of coin is the most common type found in the area of Kent to the East of the river Stour but are also found in other areas of Kent and as far away as Lincolnshire which has led Holman to propose that the coins were used in day-to-day trading rather than being reserved for special purposes such as religious offerings. The coins were distributed throughout the fill of the pit although the majority were concentrated in the north west portion; there also appear to have been four concentrations of coins which may indicate that they were deposited within as many as four separate containers, perhaps perishable bags. This type of coin is dated to the late second century to the first century BC , which with the pottery suggests deposition in the late second or early 1st century BC. (1)
