Full Description
Second World War barbed wire obstructions extending for nearly 1km along the cliff top between Cliffsend and Pegwell (TR 3521 6436 to TR 3608 6422 visible on wartime aerial photographs. Further perpendicular lines of barbed wire can be seen extending northwards form the main stretch up the eastern side of Little Cliffsend farm where a coastal battery NRHE 1423881 was located. The western end extends up to the Sandwich Road at Cliffsend, forming two layers of reinforcements along with a line of seaward trenches defending the beach of Pegwell Bay. The slit trenches extend over 450m, supported by further barbed wire and gun emplacements. The line of barbed wire forms part of the extensive coastal defences around the coast and is supported by gun emplacements at intervals (1)
