Full Description
Ex. DUNBAR; quoted as Second Rate.
Renamed HENRY in 1660, was set alight by accident when a seaman named Richard Wallis, dropped a lighted candle in the cockpit, which set fire to a pile of oakum, whilst the vessel was lying in ordinary at Chatham. Wallis made every attempt to put out the fire, but being an old man, and having been burnt in the attempt, the board at the subsequent court-martial were sympathetic to him. He was ordered to stand for an hour with his neck in a halter, the rope reeved to a gibbet. The boatswain, Mr Hawes, the senior officer on board at the time, was found guilty of neglect and ordered to be imprisoned 'during His Majestie's pleasure.' (1)(2)
