Full Description
Archaeological monitoring was carried out in 2000 during the expansion of Ospringe Brickworks. Although similar monitoring further west had found no trace of archaeologically significant remains, the 2000 work found a hollow way, alongside which 4 inhumation and 7 cremation birials were placed. Both the size and depth of the hollow way suggested some longevity. It was aligned on Oare Creek and headed in the direction of the Roman site at Syndale. It thus forms an important connection between Watling Street and its associated sites, and the north Kent coast.
The cremations dated to the late first/second centuries though one may have dated ot the later third century. The inhumations, by contrast, contained no grave goods and are suggested as being of fourth or fifth century date. They were aligned east-west. It is suggested they relate to a larger cemetery to the south. (1)
