Full Description

(TQ60527398 sited to St Peter And St Paul's Church)

Thw 'Invicta' monument was unveiled on 22nd September 1958 to commemorate the year 1067, when tradition maintains that the Men of Kent offered peace to William, Duke of Normandy if he would grant their ancient rights and liberties, and so avoid war. William agreed to this request.
The monument is seven feet high and seven feet long, having a curved top and surmounted by the carved and coloured Coat of Arms of the County of Kent. A panel under this, carved in low relief depicts Norman and Saxon soldiers in opposition, with the latter holding branches of trees above their heads.
The monument has been moved twice since it was originally erected and is now situated in the churchyard of St Peter and St Paul's Swanscombe where it was re-erected and unveiled on 22nd September 1995 (1)
