Full Description

TQ 83785337. This hollow way or leat lies immediately North of the lowest of the ponds, (TQ85SW86), but occupies the bottom of a separate small valley extending NE. Large-scale OS plans depict its lower 50m correctly as a hollow way 8m wide widening to 22m at its SW, lower, end. However, it extends as an 8m wide depression for a further 50m to the NE. It is difficult to interpret this feature. If it is a hollow way, it leads nowhere, unless it predates the moat and led to the earlier castle, but this is doubtful since it is unlikely that such a feature would survive so long in such a good state of preservation. It may merely have been a feeder leat for the moat. (1)
