Full Description
Post-medieval features including boundary ditches, a pit, ditches, and a deposit of hard-standing were identified during an evaluation at Lower Herne Village, Strode Farm in 2021. The probable boundary ditches were identified as being located along the alignments of various post-medieval boundary ditches seen on Ordnance Survey maps between 1797-1872. These features (of which many were unexcavated) measured 0.5-0.99m in width and 0.15-0.42m in depth.
Other features identified at the site include: an area of made ground which conatined fragments of pottery dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and ditches measuring 0.54-0.98m in width and 0.15-0.18m in depth. The dates of many of these ditches is uncertain.
Finds recovered from the fills of the features included a post-medieval horseshoe nail, undated animal bone fragments, fuel ash slag from coal burning, post-medieval pottery fragments (1550-1750 AD), and ceramic building material, including brick post-dating the Great Fire of London in 1666. (1)
Description from record TR 16 NE 1394:
Linear features thought to represent late post-medieval field boundaries were identified through geophysical survey at Lower Herne Village, Herne in 2014. The features were thought to relate to 1797 and 1839 field boundaries visible on historical mapping. Other features identified through the survey may relate to agriculture or natural processes. (1)
