Full Description

TR117342. Saxon mint sited to Lympne.

The Saxon mint at Lympne struck coins from the Reign of Edward the Martyr to the Short Cross issue of Cnut. (1)

The location of the site is uncertain, and compounded by the fact that the estuary of the Limen River changed considerably in the late Saxon period. The possible sites include Stutfall Castle (the old Roman Saxon Shore fort), `Sandtun' a kilometre to the South, West Hythe, Hythe, or even Lympne, although the latter was probably a Norman foundation.
