Full Description
A possible post-medieval boat house was identified at The Garth, Canterbury during an excavation in 2018. The feature comprised a rectangular pit measuring 2.8m in width, over 4m in length, and 0.57m in depth. "The pit’s basal fill consisted of a 60mm-thick layer made up of the semi-degraded remains of grass, plant foliage and wood, the semi-degraded state of which was the result of the near anaerobic condition prevailing at that depth. The vegetal material was sealed under a 0.22m-thick deposit of dark grey-brown clay, which was in turn capped by a 0.15m-thick layer of grey-brown silt containing (and largely consisting of) very large amounts of Kent Peg roof tile fragments" (from the original report, 1). The form, location, and fill of the feature has led to its interpretation as a possible 18th or 19th century boat house built over the termination of an access channel from the river. (1)
