Full Description
The Institute, High Street, Headcorn as shown on the 2nd and 4th Edition O/S maps. The building is still in use as shown on the current O/S map. The Institute was built in 1866. It was conceived by the village's Mutual Improvement Society, who sold shares to villagers to establish a company, Headcorn Hall Ltd, to build and run it. As the name suggests, the building was effectively Headcorn's first Village Hall and remained a popular meeting place until 1937. The Institute, whose large room was on the first floor, continued in community use until the late 1950's, when it was sold and the company wound up.
