Original site of the British School built c.AD 1850 by the congregation of the Congrationl Chapel of Snodland, later expanded with the purchase of the adjacent Providence Chapel building. The school closed in AD 1930 with the opening of the Central School. Visible on the 1st (1860-1875), 2nd (1897-1900) and 4th (1929-1952) ed. OS maps. Since demolished.

Full Description

Original site of the British School built c. 1850 by the congregation of the Congrationl Chapel of Snodland, later expanded with the purchase of the adjacent Providence Chapel building, this became the infants school, bringing the roll to approx 500 pupils. The school closed in 1930 with the opening of the Central School. Visible on the 1st (1860-1875), 2nd (1897-1900) and 4th (1929-1952) ed. OS maps. Since demolished.
The Townsend Hook family financially supported the school, including The British Schools Manual Training Class Room (1893), for older children. This was situated in the High Street, one of the first of its kind in Kent.

This Clock Tower was erected in Loving Memory of
CHARLES TOWNSEND HOOK,
Of ” Veles “, and the Paper Works, Snodland ,by his sorrowing mother and sisters.
Died 11th February 1877.
Deeply loved and mourned.
