Full Description

'Petition by merchants of Almain, regarding a ship laden in Flanders with cloth and other merchandise for London, driven ashore by storm on the coast of Romeneye and broken up. A great part of the cargo was salved and carried away by men of those parts, the measures and marks having been removed from the bales.' (1)

'1353. Oct. 24. Westminster. Appointment of the king's serjeant at arms John Mayn and the mayor of Romeneye to inform themselves as well by inquisition on the oath of good men of the parts of Romeneye as by such other ways and means as shall be expedient of the truth touching a petition of the king by Herman Wensem, William de Grenrode and other merchants of Almain complaining that, whereas they lately freighted a ship in Flanders with cloths and other merchandise and things for London, and on the voyage the ship was driven by a storm on the coast of Romeneye, and broken up, great part of the cargo was salved and was carried away by men of those parts and the measures and marks have been removed from the bales in which the cloths and things were rolled up, and although they have sued for restitution of the cloths and things to those detainers of these, the latter refuse to make any restitution; and to recover the goods for the petitioners arresting any of those detaining the goods whom they find resisting in the execution of the premises.'
