Full Description

Historic building recording was carried out at 87 London Road, Sittingbourne in advance of the proposed demolition of the existing property and the construction of 30 flats at the site. The house was built around 1897 and was severely damaged by fire during the early 21st century.
Surviving elements of the roof are gabled with a "decorative barge board with common rafters steadied by collars. The two large three-light mullioned windows are constructed of red sandstone.... Between the two mullioned windows a stone stringer course can be seen. The ground floor mullioned window has leaded fanlight windows with leaded glass scenes of rural industry." (from the original report, 1).
There is a Tudor influence to many of the features of the house, including the chimney stack and porch; many structures built during this period were constructed with features reflecting older styles of construction - such as farmhouses and timber framed building. The building was constructed by the makers of Peek Freans biscuits, and may have originally been called 'Eversley'. Documents included in the report which were sourced from Sittingbourne Museum suggested that some of the original stained glass windows in the structure reflected the designs on some of the Peek Freans products. It is believed that these windows were donated to the Sittingbourne Museum. (1)
