Full Description
(TQ 676 729 LO)
As part of a national project to record Industry and Enclosure in the Neolithic (Event Record 923509), RCHME carried out a Level 1 investigation of the alleged site of a causewayed enclosure at Chalk (TQ 67 SE 207) (1).
The existence of the site was confidently asserted by R Jessup, who stated that the remains had been destroyed prior to 1970 (presumably by development) (1a). RCHME was able to find no further evidence to support or deny this suggestion, but the location would be consistent with such a monument. (1)
The alleged site at Chalk has received several mentions in the archaeological literature, but all sources ultimately lead back to Jessup's brief statement referring to "...a now destroyed site at Chalk near Gravesend on the south bank of the Thames". No supporting evidence with which to examine the claim ahs ever been forthcoming. Jessup gave no precise location for the site either. The grid reference cited here is a "best guess" only. (2-3)
