Full Description
An assemblage of medieval and post-medieval artefacts alongside post-medieval masonry was identified during an evaluation carried out at Scotney Old Castle Garden in 2023. A section of 17th century wall from the East Range of the castle was identified running on a NW-SE alignment during the test pitting evaluation. Test pits located close to the Western Range identified evidence for substantial earth moving interpreted (1) as potentially being associated with the remodelling of the site during the 1830s.
Finds associated with activity and occupation at the site were recovered, including medieval pottery pre-and-post-dating the construction of the castle, West Country slate dating to the medieval period, a small amount of medieval bloomery slag and post-medieval blast furnace slag, animal bone and shell, ceramic building material including roof tile and brick, and post-medieval nails and window glass. Much of the building material may have been deposited during the partial demolition of the East Range during the later post-medieval period. (1)
