Monument record TQ 87 NE 1172 - An artillery battery of late 18th-century type, Isle of Grain

TQ 884 764: A semi-circular battery visible on air photographs held by the Public Records Office (1a). The battery does not survive. The battery appears to have had an open pentagonal terreplein, protected by an inner and outer glacis, each with an external ditch. The form is very similar to several others constructed along the south-east coast in the late 18th and early 19th centuries (1b). (1)

No trace of a battery meeting the description of the above authority could be seen in the area noted on available aerial photographs when the site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. The project did not have access to the photographs quoted as the source, the earliest photographs used dated from 1945, possibly after all trace of the site had been removed. (2)
