Monument record TQ 77 NE 1318 - The earthworks of a possible post medieval drain and flanking banks near the centre of Cooling Marshes

Summary

The earthworks of a possible post medieval drain and flanking banks near the centre of Cooling Marshes can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1947. While the eastern end held water in 1947 and continues to function as a drain the western part was disused in 1947 and has since been levelled. Neither part was marked on the 1894 Ordnance Survey map and they appear to represent an earlier subdivision of the marshes. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
