1667 wreck of English hoy which was captured, burnt, and left to founder by the Dutch near Gillingham on 12 June 1667, during the Raid on the Medway (1584349). Constructed of wood in 1665 or 1666, she was a sailing vessel variously described as a dockyard vessel or a horse transport. Status: Casualty

Full Description

PROSPEROUS, horseboat, Built Chatham, 1665, 50ft x 16ft, 68 tons. Burnt by the Dutch 1667. (1)

The PROSPEROUS hoy, 68 tons, built at Chatham 1666, found by the Dutch near the chain, and set on fire by them on 12-JUN-1667. (2)

12-JUN-1667: A dockyard hoy found by the Dutch fleet near the defence boom chain across the river near Gillingham, set on fire, and sunk. (3)

A horse-boat at the chain, the PROSPEROUS, was burnt by the Dutch. She was valued by James Norman, Clerk of the Survey at Chatham, on 17 August 1667, in a letter sent to Pepys, at £150. (4)

Described as a horseboat in source (1): 'A ferry-boat for conveying horses or carriages' [OED]; sources (2) and (3) state the vessel type as a hoy.
