Full Description

Drove on shore, near Sandown Castle, from her anchor in the Downs. (4)

`During the violent gale of wind on Saturday night, three vessels parted from their anchor in the Downs, and drove ashore, viz. His Majesty's armed ship HANNIBAL, of 20 guns, Captain O'Connor, to the northward of Sandown Castle; a large brig...and the JENNY...The latter is entirely gone to pieces...and the other two are expected to share the same fate.' [The date of loss indicated by the publication date of source (5) would appear to be 24-NOV-1804; however, in the light of sources (1) to (4), where the date of loss is given as 16-NOV-1804, the date of loss would appear to be 16 to 17-NOV-1804. Wreck reports frequently appear verbatim without altering the date of loss accordingly.]

NB: Sources (1)(2) and (3) state the place of loss as Sandown Castle, Isle of Wight (sic), followed by the MSMR (Isle of Wight).
