Full Description
'The CAESAR, Shand, from Jamaica to London, went on shore yesterday morning, on the rocks under the South Foreland.' (1)
'Deal, Feb. 8. Last night, it being very dark, the ship CAESAR, Captain James Shand, from Jamaica, bound to London, with a cargo of rum, sugar, &c. in coming round the South Foreland, got on shore on the Main, near the lights, and has beaten in over the rocks some distance. This morning she made no water, and the only damage we could learn she had sustained, with her false keel and copper being off. At present she lies much exposed to the southerly winds, but it is hoped she will be got off next tide . . .
'9 We regret to state another very heavy loss. The CAESAR, from the West Indies, with a valuable cargo on board, we mentioned, yesterday, to be on shore between St. Margaret's and Kingsdowm-heath, South Foreland . . . The CAESAR has cut away her fore and mizen masts, but she is so much damged in her bottom, that it is thought she will go to pieces. From 60 to 70 casks of coffee were landed from her this morning. His Majesty's ships are all well. Wind SW.' (3)
' . . . it is fully expected that, together with the CAESAR, it [the BENGAL] will shortly become a wrweck; the latter has bilged.' (5)
'Deal, Feb. 9 . . . The night before last the ship CAESAR from Jamaica, with a cargo of sugar, coffee and pimento, got on shore under the lights near St. Margaret's Bay, great part of the cargo is saved, and if the weather continues moderate, the remainder is expected will also be saved, and the ship got afloat again.' (6)
'TO BE SOLD BY AUCTION.
'At the SHIP INN, Dover, on MONDAY the 19th of February, at two o'clock.
'The anchors, cables, sails, hawsers, rigging, and other stores, saved from the ship CAESAR, stranded under the South Foreland.
'These stores will be put up in separate lots for the convenience of the purchasers, and may be seen at Dover, on application to LATHAM, RICE and Co.' (4)
