Monument record TQ 87 NW 1263 - The slight earthwork traces of a number of coaxial linear boundaries seen in a single large field to the north of Allhallows village

The slight earthwork traces of a number of coaxial linear boundaries seen at TQ 8368 7814 within a single large field to the north of Allhallows village. These are thought to be the remains of an embanked field system of uncertain date. These banks were detected as very slight banks on Environment Agency lidar imagery. Some appear to be former field boundaries in use at the time of earlier 19th and 20th century mapping. Others, however, appear to have been out of use for longer and can be seen to pre-date medieval/post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation. Fragments of these earlier field boundaries can be seen extending across the ridge of high ground which extends south-west of Allhallows. These were mapped from lidar imagery as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. (1)
