Full Description
The K6 was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 for the General Post Office, on the occasion of King George V's Silver Jubilee. Giles Gilbert Scott (1880-1960) was one of the most important of modern British architects. The K6 was a development from his earlier highly successful K2 telephone kiosk design of 1924, of Neo-classical inspiration. The K6 was more streamlined aesthetically, more compact and more cost-effective to mass produce. Well over 10,000 K6s were eventually produced and many still remain, continuing to be an iconic feature on Britain's streetscapes.
The K6 is a standardised design made of cast iron, painted red overall with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides and with the crowns situated on the top panels being applied not perforated. There are rectangular white display signs, reading TELEPHONE beneath the shallow-curved roof. It has modernised internal equipment. This telephone kiosk is in poor condition: the majority of the glass window panes are missing, and the paintwork has deteriorated, in particular on the corners and roof of the structure. The kiosk is situated in an alleyway between Nos. 16 and 17 High Street, Sturry. There a number of listed buildings approximately 50m to the north of the kiosk, including Laurel House, No. 36 High Street with adjoining former stables, and the Swan Inn public house, all listed at Grade II.
Although the kiosk is situated in relatively close vicinity to more than one listed building it cannot be viewed simultaneously with any of them, as it is concealed by buildings, Nos. 16 and 17 High Street. Therefore, as it cannot be said that the kiosk has a close visual relationship with any listed building, it does not meet the criteria for listing. (1)
