Full Description
The brewery was established in 1823 by John Hoile and by 1877 operated as Gillow and Company before its name changed to Baxter, Stapleton and Company in the same year. There were two more name changes, George Stapleton and Company which took place in 1884 and East Kent Brewery Company in 1887. The business acquired a number of breweries before merging with Ash and Company in 1920 to become Ash's East Kent Brewery Company. The brewery was closed in 1923 when it was acquired by Jude Hanbury and Company Limited.
The brewery has been converted into housing and is now known as Guestling Mill. (1-2)
It is built of red brick with a tiled roof on four storeys. When photographed in 1995 the building was in the process of renovation and conversion. An outbuilding to the north east is of red brick and weather boarding. (3)
