Full Description
The remains of a Second World War Heavy Anti Aircraft battery can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1946. This battery of four guns and central command post was situated near the south eastern coast of the Isle of Grain at TQ 8894 7480. The command post and all but one of the gun emplacements were built on hard standing - a former floor of a demolished RNAS building (NMR 1488177). This battery would have formed part of the Thames & Medway Gun Defended Area. This is possible the battery named Grain, number TS11 although the location given for this is circa 700m to the north-east. The battery, which has since been demolished, was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(1-3)
