Full Description
The Common Wall, a former sea wall which extends NNE for c.745m from Ryestreet into the former area of marshland known as Ryestreet Common (TQ 7472 7660 to TQ 7493 7730). The wall is recorded on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map and on all subsequent editions up to the present day. However, it is not clear when the wall was constructed. The fields flanking the wall in Ryestreet Common are drained with straight ditches and the area appears as unimproved marsh into the late 19th century. The wall is now a causeway carrying a track into the marshes. This was recorded during the course of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. (1-4)
