Full Description
'Gravesend, 9th Aug. The ALEXANDER, Richardson, from Ceylon and Mauritius, is on shore at Cole House Point, and it is feared will be wrecked. Cargo discharging.' (1)
'About 1162 bales of cinnamon have been got out of the wreck of the ALEXANDER, from Ceylon and Mauritius, on Cole House Point, and it was expected that the remainder of the cinnamon (about 500 bales) would be saved. A quantity of coffee and pepper in bulk, and some of the ship's stores, have been saved.' (2)
'The ALEXANDER, (East India trader) laden with spices and indigo, struck on the Lower Point, off Gravesend, on Saturday week, in a gale of wind, and was lost.' (3)
[It would appear that in this report the colloquial usage of "East India trader" was being applied, indicating any vessel trading to the East Indies, rather than specifically belonging to one of the East India Companies. There was no ALEXANDER in the service of the English East India Company at this period.]
NB: The publication date of 30-AUG-1828 for source (3) would appear to indicate a date of loss of 16-AUG-1828; however, it is not uncommon for wreck reports to be copied verbatim from other newspapers without altering the date of loss accordingly, and the previous Saturday, 09-AUG-1828 would be consistent with source (1).
Master: Richardson (1)(2)
