The barn at Nettlestead is believed to date from about 1360. [Follows previous mentions of Tithe Barns]. (1) The barn is of 8 bays and has porches on each side. There are "outshots" almost the whole length of the barn which has a tiled roof. Repairs have altered the form of the trusses but originally each tie beam had two curved braces on each side. Absence of any mouldings makes dating conjectural but the roof with its arched wind-braces and small curved braces to the collar beams is of a type used in the latter part of the 15th c. and the first half of the 16th c. (2) TQ 68325204. The barn, timber-framed and weatherboarded is as described by auth. 2. It is in good condition. (3) The Barn was destroyed by fire on 18 April 1962. [Photo and report in The Times of 19 April]. (4) A new barn of stone and brick now occupies its site. (5) Barn at Nettlestead Place. Grade I. Probably late 14th or early 15th century. (6) The former mid to late 15th century barn adjoining the south of the Gatehouse (TQ 65 SE 43) was destroyed by fire in 1962. (7) TQ 684520. Barn at Nettlestead. Provisional 14th century dating is c.1450. Now destroyed. (8) TQ 681521. The barn has been totally rebuilt apart from the east wall which has been completely repointed. Schedule No. 141b.
