Maritime record TQ 87 SE 80 - Unknown

Summary

Wreck of apparent English barge, located on the southern side of Stoke Creek, south of the Isle of Grain. Constructed of wood, these remains lie in the inter-tidal zone, and are likely to match the typical profile of the beached and abandoned hulks in this area, constructed in the late 19th century and abandoned in the mid 20th century. This is consistent with the first recording of this vessel in 1962. Status: Site

Full Description

Vertical Datum: LAT Orientation: EW 21-AUG-1962 Stranded wreck shown in 51 26 03N 000 42 39E. 14-JUL-1971 Stranded wreck dries 5m in 51 26 04N 000 42 38.5E. 13-MAR-1991 Shown lying E/W, on photoplot (1). Additional photograph (2). The initial recording date in a well-known and used river, suggests that the vessel may have been abandoned some time, but not particularly long before, 1962, but this is not necessarily conclusive. This vessel is not, apparently, recorded in "The Last Berth of the Sailorman", but is likely to share the profile of other sailing vessels dating from the late 19th century, recorded in that source as being hulked or burnt and abandoned in the mid 20th century. This is not, however, conclusive, either in terms of vessel type or of place of loss. (3)
