Summary

The remains of a barge or fishing vessel recorded from the Hydrographic Office wreck index. It was located at the eastern end of the anti-invasion obstructions put up to protect the hard linking Grain Tower to the beach. The outline of the wreck could be seen in the mud on aerial photographs taken in 2007. Status: Site

Full Description

A large barge or fishing vessel noted on the Hydrographic Office wreck index. The wreck site is recorded at 51 27
04.5N 000 43 30E to 51 27 05.5N 000 43 58E then to 51 27 02N 000 44 08E, immediately east of a line of large piles which stick out of mud about 6ft high at low water. These are the remains of a pier-like obstruction built to protect the hard from Grain Tower to the beach from invasion (recorded in NMR Monument: 1542260). On 08-JAN-1980 Obstruction North of Martello Tower removed. Jetty ruins N and S also gone. Obstructions still exist NE of tower.

The outline of the wreck could be seen in the mud 90m to the SE of Grain Tower on aerial photographs taken in 2007. This was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(2)
