Full Description

A ditched enclosure of probable later prehistoric date is visible as cropmarks on air photographs taken July 16th 2001. Assuming a complete circuit existed, then the cropmarks represent the northeastern half of a broadly subrectangular enclosure, the 'corners' of which are curved rather than angular. The cropmarks cover an area measuring a minimum of 68 metres nw-se by 33 metres ne-sw. A clear entrance is visible at the ne-facing corner. A gap in the ditch circuit measures circa 7 metres across. Both ditches expand markedly in width as they approach it, suggesting some form of monumental entrance structure. In addition, on both sides of the entrance a narrower ditch is visible runing inside and concentric to the main ditch circuit, suggesting that in the area of the entrance at least, the enclosure was bivallate. With the exception of the expanded terminals, the narrowness and regularity of the outer ditch (less than1 metre wide) suggests that it may have held a palisade. (1)
