Full Description
A large irregularly-shaped enclosure is visible as cropmarks on air photographs taken July 16th 2001. Up to 108 metres across, it is broadly kidney shaped, with the possibility of some straight internal divisions. Geological conditions make the archaeological cropmarks obscure in places, but the western side of the enclosure appears to be followed by a former field boundary which was still extant on the late 19th century Ordnance Survey mapping of the area. A later prehistoric date seems plausible for the enclosure, although the relationship with the field boundary should be borne in mind. Two circular features, each circa 10 metres across, and located a short distance to the west, probably represent relatively recent quarrying - perhaps marlpits. (1)
