Full Description
New Romney Advanced Landing Ground, Kent, TR 048 314. Opened in 1943 and closed by December 1944. A sketch plan accompanying source 1 shows the site to be North of New Romney, specifically immediately north of "The New Sewer". The airfield comprised two landing areas made of Sommerfeld Track, a steel mesh matting. There were 4 Blister aircraft hangars, the only accommodation was a tented camp. use of the site in 1985 was said to be for agricultural purposes. (1)
An article by Denis J Corley in Aifield Review notes that New Romney Advance Landing Ground (or ALG) appears to have been used by RAF Squadrons 181, 182, 247 flying Typhoon aircraft in Summer 1943, but to have not been used at all for flying in 1944. He suggests that this may be due to the changed goal of the Allied invasion plans from the Pas de Calais to Normandy, making the Kent ALGs less useful. (2)
New Romney (Honeychild) Advanced Landing Ground was only used to accommodate signal units awaiting transit to Normandy. The site was felt to be too exposed to attack. Source 3 contains a sketch map of the landing ground. (3)
New Romney/Honeychild Advanced Landing Ground was sited on an alternative 400 acre site near to St Mary-in-the Marsh. The initial choice had been the nearby abandoned First World War airfield at New Romney/Littlestone. The site included two Sommerfield Track runways, a tented camp, three refuelling-hardstands, four Blister hangars and an MT shed. It was used in 1943 by Typhoons of Number 124 Airfield and then in 1944 it became a reserve ALG and was used for emergency landings. In late November 1945 it was abandoned. (4)
