Summary

The site of a former advanced landing ground, a special type of World War Two temporary military airfield constructed as part of the preparations for the Allied invasion of Europe. The site of the advanced landing ground had previously been used in 1916 during World War One as an emergency military airfied, and again in 1940 the site was briefly utilized for military aviation exercises. The actual advanced landing ground was constructed in 1943. It comprised two runways of Sommerfeld Track (a type of steel matting), with four Blister aircraft hangars and a tented camp for accommodation. It played no part in the actual D Day assault but was used for anti shipping duties later in 1944 by Royal Air Force and Fleet Air Airm units. The airfield closed in 1945, the runways and hangars were removed and the site was subsequently used for agriculture.

Full Description

Swingfield Advanced Landing Ground, Kent, TR 240 448: a special type of World War Two temporary military airfield constructed as part of the preparations for the Allied invasion of Europe. The site of the advanced landing ground had previously been used in 1916 during World War One as an emergency military airfied, and again in 1940 the site was briefly utilized for military aviation exercises. The actual advanced landing ground was constructed in 1943. It played no part in the actual D Day assault but was used for anti shipping duties later in 1944. Units using Swinfield were 119 Squadron RAF and 819 Squadron FAA (Fleet Air Arm). The airfield closed in 1945, the runways and hangars were removed and the site was subsequently used for agriculture. Swingfield Advanced Landing Ground, Kent, TR 240 449. Opened 1943, closed 1945. The advanced landing ground comprised two runways made of Sommerfeld track (steel matting), and was equipped with four Blister aircraft hangars and a tented camp for accomodation. There were a number of hardstandings for aircraft improvised from gravel and hardcore. In 1985 the site was used for agriculture. (2)
