Full Description
Wood Church Advanced Landing Ground, Kent, TQ 945 365. It was built in 1943. In 1943 it was used by Royal Canadian Air Force 231 and 400 Squadrons on Reconnaisance missions. In 1944 at the time of D Day it was used by 410, 411 and 412 Squadrons of the United States Army 9th Air Force 37rd Fighter Group. These units were involved in attacking enemy targets and infrastructure in northern France prior to the D Day assault and provided air cover over the beaches on the day itself. They moved to France early in July 1944. (1)
Woodchurch Advance Landing Ground, Kent TQ 948 362. Opened 1943, closed 1945. The airfield consisted of two runways made of Sommerfeld Track (steel matting) and steel planking. The airfield accommodation was a tented camp. No aircraft hangars are recorded. By December 1944 the site was derequisitioned. (2)
