Monument record TQ 65 SW 1 - Iron Age pottery; sarsen structure

Summary

Late 1st-early 2nd cent. pottery was found c.1956 around sarsens in a field at the rear of the 'Papermakers' public house, Plaxtol at TQ 60515336. Preliminary excavations by boys of Tonbridge School revealed a group of close-packed sarsens forming a quarter of a circle of a radius of about 10.0m running out into the field from a hedge, on a gentle east slope. Within, beneath 0.5m of topsoil, is a strata of close-packed rubble, possibly natural, which has been excavated to a depth of 1.0 m. The excavations are limited, but there is enough to show that the sarsens have been artificially placed in their present position. Sherds from the site were dated by the B.M. to Iron Age 'B'.
