Maritime record TR 01 NE 169 - Gwendoline

Summary

The partially disintegrating remains of what appears to be a probably post-medieval maritime vessel are visible on vertical and oblique aerial photographs of 1941 as a structure between Dungeness and the Dengemarsh Gut Shafts. It was originally recorded at this location in 1929. By the time of the vertical aerial photographs of 1973 no remains of the vessel were visible. The extent of this feature has been mapped from aerial photographs as part of the South East RCZAS NMP project. Status: Site

Full Description

14-JUN-1929 Position east 1.5 miles SW of Dungeness Point half
submerged at high water and dry at low water mast and funnel showing
about 8ft.

12-Nov-1930 position 50 54 38N 000 57 14E, 255.5 Deg 7 cables from
Dungeness height.

09-APR-1975 Not found during normal search, general sea bed depth 4m (1).

The remains of the possibly post-medieval vessel are centred at TR 0726 1657, and extend across an area measuring approximately 76m east to west along the seafront, and a maximum of 12m north to south. The location is just to the south of what is now the western end of the Power Station site at Dungeness. The wreck is particularly clearly visible on oblique aerial photographs of 1941. By the time of the vertical aerial photograph of 1973, the remains of the vessel were no longer visible (2-4).
