Full Description
Site of a Second World War light anti aircraft (Diver) battery near the Coastguard lookout, Dungeness. This was armed with two triple-barrelled 20mm Polsten guns in August 1944, and manned by a Detachment of the SAAA (1).
This area was surveyed as part of the South East RCZAS NMP project. The anti aircraft battery was not visible on historic aerial photographs of 1941 or 1942. This may be because, as suggested above, the anti-aircraft battery was not deployed to this location until 1944. No sign of the battery was visible on aerial photographs of 1946 either. It is possible that, given the loose shingle characteristic of the ground in this area; the anti aircraft battery was situated on the road, which would have provided a more stable base. This may explain why no lasting trace of the battery was visible on the aerial photographs (2).
