Full Description

The earthwork and structural remains of this Second World War HAA battery was mapped from RAF aerial photographs taken in August 1945.

When photographed in 1945 the site appeared as two adjacent groups of four gun emplacements in an arc, each gun within an encircling protective embankment. The northern group were centred at TQ 8498 7797. The gun pits were arranged in an arc (open to the west) around a curving service road which linked it to the northern end of an area associated support buildings to the west at the edge of the village of Allhallows (centred at TQ 8389 7779). At the centre of the group of guns were two buildings, possibly the command post and magazine. A short road led from this group of guns south to a second group of four guns centred at TQ 8410 7781. These were also arranged in an arc, this one open to the east. The command post and other ancillary buildings for this group of guns were located outside the arc to the west linked by two branches of a support road. This road extended westwards into the southern part of the support buildings at the edge of Allhallows (described above).

These features were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape project. (2-3)
