Monument record TQ 87 NW 1269 - Diver Box Diver Battery Ts33

Summary

Site of a Second World War heavy anti aircraft (Diver) Battery in the Diver Box at Stoke Marshes. It was armed with eight 3.7-inch Mark IIc guns, and manned by 115 Anti Aircraft Artillery Regiment. It was redeployed here from TQ802741 on 8th August 1944. It formed part of 28 Anti Aircraft Artillery Brigade. The faint traces of this HAA battery could be seen arranged around the north-eastern edge of a field against a former sea wall. The site appeared as eight sub-circular marks (corresponding to each of the eight guns recorded at the site) arranged in an arc. A ninth single mark could be seen at the centre of the arc. These Diver sites were deployed rapidly in the summer of 1944, the structures often temporary. The site as seen on aerial photographs taken in May 1946 appeared as pale patches, possibly the traces of recently removed temporary structures and sandbagged emplacements. This site was mapped from these 1946 RAF aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
