Full Description
Herne Bay coastal battery located at TR 1850 6835. This was an emergency battery built during the Second World War as part of Eastern Command's coastal defences. The battery was commissioned in May 1940 and mounted two 6-inch ex-naval guns. It was initially manned by 333 Coast Battery Royal Artillery, then is referenced as being manned by 415 Battery of 549 Coast Regiment until February 1943. Guns are still listed at the battery in September 1944.
The gun emplacements were located at TR 1850 6835 and the Depression Rangefinder at TR 1890 6845. (1-2)
Aerial photography from 1968 shows that the site is a seafront area and no features of the battery remain. (3)
