Summary

The site of Mill Point coastal battery, an emergency coastal battery built during the Second World War as part of Eastern Command's coastal defences. The battery mounted four 5.5-inch guns. It is referenced as being manned by 412 Coast Battery between October 1940 and April 1942. Aerial photography from 1982 shows that the battery has been removed and the site is occupied by a seafront area.

Full Description

Mill Point coastal battery located at TR 219 354. This was an emergency battery built during the Second World War as part of Eastern Command's coastal defences. The battery mounted four 5.5-inch guns. It is referenced as being manned by 412 Coast Battery between October 1940 and April 1942.
No. 1 gun emplacement was located at TR 2185 3530, No. 2 and No. 3 gun at TR 2200 3535 and No. 4 gun at TR 2205 3535. The Barr and Stroud rangefinder was positioned at TR 2180 3530. (1)

Aerial photography from 1982 shows that the battery has been removed and the site is occupied by a seafront area and funfair. (2)
