'1361. Dec. 14. Westminster. Commission to Thomas de Harcherugge, chamberlain of Middelton, Simon de Bradested, John Barry, Fulk Payforer and Ralph de Holm, on complaint by John Pieres, John Lopitz and John Mondragoun, merchants of Berme in Spain, that, whereas they lately loaded at La Rochelle in a ship called LA SEINT JOHAN of Bilbau in Spain 80 tuns of white wine for London, to trade with there, and the ship although governed by one Lodomannus de Mergate hired by them to bring the ship with the wines safely to London, through his want of care and default, was wrecked near the isle of Shepeye, and the wines with their other goods and things, as beds, cloths, "cofres", armour and much other gear, were washed ashore on the said island and elsewhere in Middelton Hundred, and there occupied by divers men of those parts without any restitution made to them, to inform themselves and make inquisition in whose hands the wine and other goods are and arrest and deliver to the merchants all that can be proved to be theirs, first satisfying those by whom these were salved, according to the statute in that case provided, and to arrest all those guilty of the taking away and detention of the goods if they refuse to deliver them to the merchants and imprison them until the king give other order touching them.
