Full Description
ST 3107 4785 A Post Medieval and 20th century brick and tilemaking site, visible as a brickearth pit and buildings, was mapped from aerial photographs taken in 1946. Located in fields between the north bank of Brue Pill and Burnham-on-Sea, the site consists of a very large brickearth pit for the clay extraction, parts of which was filled with water, ancillary buildings, kiln, brick drying shed and narrow gauge railway. The site Owned by Colthurst and Symons & Co Ltd, the Apex brick and tilemaking site was visible on the 1:2,500 scale 1st edition OS map. Although still extant in aerial photographs taken in 1966, much of the brickearth pit had been filled with water. The site was bought in 1969 for turning into a leisure and wildlife park. The site buildings were no longer extant in aerial photographs taken in 1992. (1-5)
