Full Description
The earthwork remains of a length of former medieval or post medieval sea wall extending north-west from West Court to Cliffe Creek between TQ 7153 7681and TQ 7120 7582. The land to the east of the wall has been excavated away for clay extraction and is now largely flooded. The wall, visible as a sinuous embankment, could be traced for c.1200m and was mapped from aerial photographs taken in 1947 as part of the Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. Some of the original alignment appears to have since been destroyed, the current sea wall following a slightly different course in places. A second length of sea wall (1531669) met this at its mid-point. These together with further fragment of wall (1533397) made up a system of flood defences across the marsh. (1)
