Full Description
The earthwork remains of an embanked D-shaped enclosure of uncertain date seen at TQ 7377 7724, adjacent to a watercourse in Cliffe Marshes. It measures approximately 35m by 65m, and appears to be defined by a bank with traces of an outer ditch. It was seen on aerial photographs and mapped as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
It is possible that the enclosure was a post medieval sheepfold or sheepwick, but may have its origins in the medieval as a former saltern mound. Many of existing mounds were re-used in the post medieval period, elevated areas being important in an area prone to flooding. (1)
