Monument record TQ 77 NW 1378 - Undated enclosure, Cliffe

Summary

The earthwork remains of an embanked enclosure of uncertain date adjacent to a watercourse in Cliffe Marshes which was seen on aerial photographs and mapped as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. It is possible that the enclosure was a post medieval sheepfold or sheepwick, but may have its origins in the medieval period as a former saltern mound. Many of existing mounds were re-used in the post medieval period, elevated areas being important in an area prone to flooding.
