Full Description

Among the evidence of Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age activity which revealed during investigations at Shottendane road near Margate articulated human remains were recovered as well as fragments of disarticulated human bone.
The finds were most numerous from excavation area A where among the finds recovered from the fills of five closely spaced pits were fragments of a charred human cranium and other fragments of unburnt human bone. Further human remains were recovered from features in Pit Group 6276, on the western side of the excavation area (Fig. 4, inset A), where two articulated skeletons of adult individuals (skeletons 6295 and 6594) were found interred in the lower fills of pit 6274 (Plates 1-4). A fragment of adult cranium was also found in the fill of adjacent pit 6201. Elsewhere; during the watching brief an isolated inhumation burial (grave 6789) containing the poorly preserved remains of an adult individual laid out in a crouched position was recorded as being of a likely prehistoric date and may be broadly contemporary with the LBA/EIA settlement activity recorded in Areas A and C. There was also a a single disarticulated fragment of possible human bone recorded in area C.
